This couple had a specific request for their maternity photo shoot – they wanted photos of them walking San Francisco’s Labyrinth pregnant. I must admit, I’ve lived in the Bay Area for nearly 20 years and I had never seen said Labyrinth before – in fact, I’m a little embarrassed to admit I didn’t even know it existed. So as soon as this location was requested, I jumped with excitement. It sounded beautiful AND it has a special meaning to the expecting couple.
What is Land’s End Labyrinth in San Francisco? It’s actually an art installation created by Eduardo Aguilera in 2004. In 2015 it was almost completely destroyed by vandals who threw the rocks off the cliff. In true San Francisco fashion, the community came together and rebuilt it stone by stone following the same outline as the original. Major kudos to the community for reviving it for the rest of the world to enjoy!
When we met in San Francisco for their maternity session, it was a glorious hot day. They brought their dog, Lou in tow as well. She was very attached to her mama. She insisted on being within at least two feet of her mama at all times. So if you spot a little black dog cowering in the frame, that’s our girl!
If these photos get you inspired to walk the Labyrinth – pregnant or not – here’s a few tips:
- Arrive early, super early in the morning when there are less people there
- If you’re going to take photos at sunset, then you’ll need to work around other people who are there; people line up and take turns getting their photo taken (very courteous of them!) which is great but it just takes a little longer
- It’s about a 15 minute walk from the Sutro Bath’s visitor center parking lot; the path is very easy to walk
