My mom, aunt and I hosted a vintage storybook baby shower inspired by the traditional Little Golden Books. We hosted it at the Delta King in Sacramento – a beautiful riverboat motel docked right on the Delta River. It was a perfect venue for a baby shower with the added whimsy and character of it being on a riverboat.
My mom was the creative genius of the event, my aunt tackled one of the more robust creative projects and I provided creative support/editing and of course these photographs.
The expectant mom sent us her Pinterest board for her nursery which is where we pulled inspiration and decided on the vintage storybook nursery rhyme theme. The color pallet was lavender (the new pink!) accented with white. The table settings were vignettes of a vintage Little Golden book with a mason jar sitting on top filled with purple and white alstroemeria flowers. Mom tied a simple burlap ribbon around the jar. We then placed custom made birch wood candles around it. Mom made these at her and her husband’s Willow Farm. They cut birch wood stumps into smaller cylinders and then drilled out a hole on the top to fit a tea light candle. A different aunt had these really cute chalk boards and stands that we borrowed and wrote the names of various girlish nursery rhyme book titles on it. We topped it with a bundle of lavender.
To really transform the venue we rented white chair covers and lavender sashes. And to make it extra special for the expectant mom we decorated her chair with a hanging mason jar filled with lavender, her last name initial of ‘W’ painted lavender, and a small chalk board with her name.
For the name place settings, we used barber shop straws in grey and white and wrote each person’s name on it with a straw decoration. Because this was a sit down event, on the backside of the decoration we identified what the person had ordered (chicken or vegetarian). We stuck these in a vase filled with white beans. Also, we painted a few frames lavender and put baby pictures of the parents in it. These were gifted to the expectant mom after the event.
We wanted to host a book and diaper raffle for guests since a new mom can never have too many diapers or books! We used my grandma’s old lug box for people put their books and a vintage pickle jar as the ticket holder.
My aunt made and decorated this stunning wishing tree which was also gifted to the expectant mom after the shower. Auntie used mini mason jars decorated with twill and electric tea lights along with baby shower tidbits. She hand made each card making unique designs on each for guests to write a wish and hang from the tree. I’m pretty sure the tree was a manzanita tree that she had painted white.
A party isn’t a party unless there is a special gift for the guests! We ordered lavender colored chocolate covered sunflower seeds from Nuts.com and put them in these really cute mini jars. My aunt and mom baked lavender cookies that were packaged with its recipe. And of course we displayed a fun chalk board that read, ‘The End’ – just like all the great nursery rhyme classic books do.
The expectant mom felt so special and showered with love on her special day. It was so much fun to work on an event like this with my mom and aunt too.
