It was a family gathering in Walnut Creek to celebrate and take photos with my step-daughter who was visiting. Every year we carve out an evening to take photos together. Since she doesn’t get to visit us often, I know how special these photos are to her. Especially having photos with her dad. This year, we gathered the family: step-daughter, dad, grandma and brother and headed out for an early evening photo shoot in Walnut Creek.
My son was super excited. It was a special treat to head outside for an adventure after dinnertime. Usually, he’d be home taking a bath and winding down. To say he was all smiles would be an understatement. Not only was he laughing and playing the entire time, he also provided lots of reasons for the others to laugh too. He was totally cheeky. And yes, he kept running away and had his own ideas about what we should be doing but it was all fun. I didn’t mind a bit. Of course, I wasn’t the one chasing after him. That job was for his dad or sister to do. I’m the photographer after all.
My step-daughter is a natural in front of the camera. Perhaps it’s the European gaze that I love – cause you know, Euros don’t smile as much as us Americans (that’s a fact people!). Some of my favorite photos are of her smiling though. I think it really captures her youth and playfulness. But as you know, most 12-year-olds try really hard to look grown-up. And given she’s my height already, she certainly does look grown! Crazy to think she’ll be taller than me next year! Yikes! What a strange feeling to have your kids grow taller than you. And I’m no shorty either (not super tall either – but above average).
Anyways, I hope you enjoy these photos of a family gathering in Walnut Creek. Of these people, big and small, bring so much joy and love to my life. I love each one of them. And I love being able to capture these moments we have together.
